It was an honor to receive the Robert Michel Scholarship.
The skills that I learned and the experiences I acquired working on numerous projects will definitely carry me to farther places and beyond in the professional world.

The Challenge

The McNeese Athletic Foundation was formed to raise funds for the McNeese Athletics Department and to strengthen the financial status of its athletic program. The sole purpose of the athletic foundation is to generate donation-related income to support athletic programs and scholarships for student-athletes.

Your gift assists McNeese in offering a quality educational experience to deserving student-athletes. Support generated by the McNeese Athletic Foundation also provides resources for the athletic programs to compete at the highest level. The cost of providing academic and athletic programs has increased dramatically over the past few years. More than 300 student-athletes benefit from your generous participation in this effort. Your support is an investment in the future of McNeese State University and in the future of its student-athletes as they prepare to become the leaders of tomorrow.

The McNeese Athletic Foundation needs your support to continue adding scholarship opportunities, improving facilities, and creating the edge it takes to win championships. The price of excellence is escalating. Our challenge is to provide the necessary resources for our coaches to give them the best possible chance to excel. Our goal is to provide student-athletes with the ability to succeed academically and athletically while preparing them to be successful in life after their collegiate careers.

We need your help now more than ever to overcome these challenges and achieve our goals. If everyone will do their part, we will be able to provide our teams and student-athletes with the opportunity for excellence that they deserve. Why Establish an Athletic Scholarship?

For over forty years, George G. Buchanan attended high school and college football games in this area. He followed McNeese Cowboy football across the country and was a devout fan. He served as President of the McNeese Hundred Booster Club and played a large role in the building of the Cowboy Room located in Cowboy Stadium. George's support and passion for the sport of football was unsurpassed. Chris Buchanan, George's son, thought his father would have been very pleased to have a scholarship in his name to benefit McNeese State University Football. So Chris established the George G. "Buck” Buchanan Football Scholarship as a way to memorialize his father's life.

Across the country, named memorial scholarships are being established on a daily basis. In the field of intercollegiate athletics, they have never been more popular. Universities are constantly seeking ways to subsidize their ever-growing budgets, and in today's collegiate world, the majority of athletic monies are provided from private donations. An athletic memorial scholarship is just one way to help alleviate some of the stress associated with meeting NCAA regulations and restrictions.

An athletic memorial scholarship is an endowed fund that benefits a student-athlete by providing a full or partial scholarship. Only the interest accrued is spent. The principal amount of the endowed scholarship will never be depleted. This ensures that the scholarship will continue to benefit student-athletes for years to come. In addition to the apparent help that the athletic memorial scholarship provides to a student-athlete, it may also serve as an excellent way to memorialize a loved one.

"It's hard to imagine that any good can come out of such a tragedy. But now we see that it can,” stated Lucy Burns. In the early '90s, Lucy's son, Mac Burns, was a promising young golfer at McNeese State University. Tragically, at the age of 20, Mac was killed in a car accident. The family struggled with his death, as did the community. Instead of mourning Mac's death, his family and friends decided to celebrate the life of this talented and well-liked young man. They organized a golf tournament to raise money for the Mac Burns Memorial Golf Scholarship. Over a decade later the memorial fund is as active as ever, with enough money to branch into another three academic scholarships.

Each memorial scholarship is unique. Donors can select from different criteria to personalize their scholarship. The donor chooses the scholarship name and may choose to designate a certain major, classification, G.P.A., hometown or even a specific position on the team. The possibilities are endless.

Anyone can establish an athletic memorial scholarship. The minimum amount for an endowed scholarship is $10,000. This provides for a partial scholarship to a student-athlete. For a complete scholarship, full tuition and books, the amount is greater. Although the numbers might sound high, a scholarship can be started with as little as $500 with annual donations being added over the years. Contributions are made until the minimum amount is reached or, if the donor chooses, indefinitely.

When Richard Chozen passed away, the question of where to send flowers was never addressed. In lieu of flowers the family had already decided to request donations to the Harry Chozen Baseball Scholarship Fund. The memorial fund had been established years ago in memory of Richard's father, Harry. Because of the generosity of both family and friends, the Harry Chozen Baseball Scholarship Fund has reached 130% of its original goal.

Endowments
A named endowed scholarship fund may be established with a gift of $10,000 or more. A minimum contribution of at least $500 is required to start the fund and annual donations may continue until the minimum scholarship level of $10,000 is reached. Endowment funds are protected for perpetuity and only the interest generated is spent on the cost of tuition, books or room and board at the donor's discretion.

Planned Giving
Donations in the form of insurance policies, stocks, trusts, property and bequests are a great way to generate a meaningful and substantial gift to the athletics program. These gifts also provide estate tax savings and other benefits to your heirs. We will gladly assist you in any way to establish a deferred gift for athletics.

Memorial Gift
