Bill Iles art exhibited in DeRidder

The RealArt DeRidder (RAD) gallery held a ‘Coming Home’ reception for four distinguished artist who have pursued art as a passion in their lives.

The show featured artists: Bill Iles (far right in picture), Joelle Ford, David Clanton and Donna Pickens.

Artists and art enthusiast mingled and reacquainted themselves with each other as The Beauregard’s Courtesy played in the background.

"It’s great to be able to have art displayed in my hometown,” Iles said. "Truly walking the streets of DeRidder and living here has influenced by art and I’m happy to experience this.”

Illes’s art that is on display consisted of large oil paints that reflect the landscapes of the Dry Creek area, where his family maintains a five-generation homestead.

He retired from McNeese State University, where he served as Visual Arts Department Head, and maintains an active studio in Lake Charles.

"In high school we had no art department,” said Ford. "It’s great to see that a group of us decided to pursue art and cultivate it for the next generation.”

Ford takes sculpture to the next level using items that are mundane or discarded and presents them as a group to create interesting and complex pieces.

"Even though my work is very different in manner of application and the corresponding finished results, one thread of continuity exists—the utilization of material found, usually items that were no longer thought to have value.”

Clanton displayed abstract works that catch the eye with bright, vivid colors.

"Photography has long vied for full acceptance in galleries and the visual academy, but now more than ever, the works of fine-art photographers using digital media are appearing in art galleries and being published in books.”

Clanton said, "It’s great to have an dedicated space in DeRidder for displaying art. Mayor Ron Roberts is to be commended for having the vision of such a place.”

Although originally a painter, Donna Pickens has been creating sculptures, installations and large-scale public and private art commissions since 1986.

A lot of her work in the "Coming Home” exhibit used light as a subject. Not just light, but light fixtures.

"Light Window” is a sculpture Pickens created using light tubes and wires.

"I’m grateful for the opportunity to have my art here in DeRidder,” Pickens said. "This experience has brought back to life the desire to create more and dedicate more time to my art.

She has also designed meditative spaces as private commissions for gardens, medical centers, churches, and outdoor environments in Atlanta, Georgia and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The exhibit conclucded January 9, 2010, with a special author’s reading to end the show.

Mary and Charles Zebley

After a teaching career that began in 1960, Charles Zebley is enjoying his well-deserved retirement. His tenure at McNeese State University began in 1967 as an instructor of physical science and physics lab courses. As if teaching college science wasn’t enough, Charles also taught at St. Louis Catholic High School during his lunch hour, oftentimes eating his sandwich in the car on the way. His passion for education led him to teach advanced math, calculus and physics full-time at St. Louis in 1996, although he continued teaching a technology physics night course at McNeese for nine years.

During his McNeese career, Charles was promoted to associate professor and taught beginning astronomy and a variety of physics classes. Over time Charles slowly reduced his teaching load, and officially retired from St. Louis Catholic High School in May 2011. He still teaches ACT preparatory classes at St. Louis in the fall and spring and was inducted into the St. Louis Hall of Fame in 2009. Even though he and his wife of two years, Mary, are relatively new to the retirement scene, they are enjoying it. As a retirement gift to himself, Charles and Mary recently traveled to Israel and Italy. Mary, a McComb, MS native, worked for 30 years as a medical insurance billing specialist.

The couple has five children and five grandchildren between them. The Zebleys stay healthy walking around the McNeese campus and take pleasure in gardening and working in their yard. Charles also plays golf with fellow Outriders member, David Frantz. Mary and Charles are active parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and enjoy participating in Outriders activities such as the spring picnic and Christmas party.
