The McNeese State University Burton College of Education took its 4th annual Unlock Education event virtual for high school juniors and seniors in Southwest Louisiana interested in the teaching profession.
The event began as a Pinnacle Excellence Award by Dr. Katie Williams, assistant professor of education, and is designed to encourage students who are considering a career in education to experience what the Department of Education Professions offers. This year participants engaged in several sessions that explored classroom management and how to reach all learners of various backgrounds and learning styles.
Mickey Smith Jr., the 2020 Grammy Music Educator Award winner and a McNeese graduate, was also on hand to discuss the education profession with the young students.
Students also learned about campus life, housing, financial aid and academic offerings at McNeese.
Unlock Education is also held in conjunction with Educators Rising, a national organization focused on the recruitment and development of aspiring educators. The Burton College of Education currently supports five high school programs in Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jeff Davis parishes and students who complete the program have the option to earn two certificates that are recognized by McNeese for course credit towards an education degree.
