Endowments

Endowed Scholarships

McNeese values its students and works diligently to ensure that funding is available to attract both talented and diverse individuals. Many students may not have access to higher education opportunities without the benefit of a scholarship. The award can help a student to minimize their financial burden so they can instead focus their attention on academic studies.

By starting an endowed scholarship, a donor is placing their money in a fund that will last forever. Contributions that are made to an endowment are invested over time for the purpose of gaining income. The endowed principle or corpus never depletes in value since only the interest earned from the endowed principle is expended.

An endowed scholarship may be started with an investment as small as $500. Additional contributions may then be made until the minimum amount of funds required to initiate an endowed scholarship of $15,000 is reached. The higher the scholarship value the greater the payout. An endowment in excess of $190,000 is needed to provide tuition, fees and books for a student for one year.

Endowed scholarships may be started to support an academic award or a student-athlete award. Donors establishing an endowed scholarship may specify the name of the award (family name, company name, memorial tribute, etc.) and the area of interest in which to direct the award (the specific college, department, program, athletic sport, etc.) and the criteria for selection.

Endowed Professorships

McNeese provides excellence in education in all aspects, but particularly in its effort to recruit and retain qualified faculty. One way to ensure the continuity of quality instruction is through an endowed professorship.

Professorships are awarded to faculty on a competitive basis to provide supplemental funding in support of academic research, faculty development, conference travel, specialty equipment and maintaining accreditation standards.

Named Endowed Professorships provide funding to reward faculty in the classroom to enhance academic excellence. Endowed professorships allow the donor to name the professorship and designate the field of study.

These awards ensure that faculty remains intellectually vigorous, current, and enthusiastic regarding the subjects they teach. A named endowed professorship begins with a minimum investment of $10,000.

Donations may be added annually until the gift reaches the minimum endowed professorship level of $80,000. A gift of $80,000 contributed for an endowed professorship qualifies for a $20,000 Louisiana Board of Regents match, thus creating a $100,000 endowed professorship.

Designated Endowments

Part of McNeese State University’s vision is to be the First Choice for donors wanting to support the community. Another option for donors in addition to endowed scholarships, professorships and oak trees is designated endowments. As state funding has decreased, the need for specific endowments has become more important than ever.

Designated endowments provide a perpetual source of funds to help sustain a variety of areas. Endowments may be designated for a specific college, department, program, sport or for the area of greatest need. You may determine how the monies are used or you may leave it to the discretion of the appropriate personnel.

Endow an Oak

On the campus of McNeese State University, more than 300 live oak trees provide living green spaces for students to use and enjoy. Their rambling branches, which form cool canopies, help create a campus with an inviting natural beauty.

McNeese State University was established in 1939 on a tract of farmland owned by Calcasieu Parish. The first three buildings were constructed on this open farmland, including Bulber Auditorium, the Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Kaufman Hall. The first live oaks were planted to surround these buildings in the early ‘40s. By the late ‘40s, live oaks were planted both to line Ryan Street and to fill the campus interior.
The legacy of McNeese’s live oaks may now be continued through your contribution for perpetual care and protection of our live oaks. A minimum contribution of $1,000 allows you to endow an oak. At the base of the personally selected tree, a plaque will be placed with the designated name. Please contact the Foundation Office at 337.475.5588 to determine the location of live oaks awaiting adoption, or click here to make a donation.
